Spring Batch

Many applications within the enterprise domain require bulk processing to perform business operations in mission critical environments. These business operations include automated, complex processing of large volumes of information that is most efficiently processed without user interaction. These operations typically include time based events (e.g. month-end calculations, notices or correspondence), periodic application of complex business rules processed repetitively across very large data sets (e.g. insurance benefit determination or rate adjustments), or the integration of information that is received from internal and external systems that typically requires formatting, validation and processing in a transactional manner into the system of record. Batch processing is used to process billions of transactions every day for enterprises.

Spring Batch is a lightweight, comprehensive batch framework designed to enable the development of robust batch applications vital for the daily operations of enterprise systems. Spring Batch builds upon the productivity, POJO-based development approach, and general ease of use capabilities people have come to know from the Spring Framework, while making it easy for developers to access and leverage more advance enterprise services when necessary.

so you haven't seen complaints about maven?

have you only heard good things?  i'm surprised...

here's some stuff to balance it out.

first, a couple of common complaints:
  • too complex
  • too rigid
  • too buggy
  • too opaque
  • difficult and time-consuming to debug problems
then, a couple of links:

SVN, Git

AMO = addons.mozilla.org team...
Moving away from SVN

We moved AMO into SVN in 2006 and it’s treated us relatively well. Somewhere along the line, we decided to tag our production versions at a revision of trunk instead of keeping a separate tag and merging changes into it. It’s worked for us but it’s a hard cutoff on code changes, which means that while we’re in a code freeze no one can check anything in to trunk. As we begin to branch for larger projects this will become more of a hassle, so I’m planning on going back to a system where a production tag is created and changes are merged into it as they are ready to go live.

Most of the development team has been using git-svn for several months and, aside from the commands being far more verbose, we haven’t had many complaints. We’ve discovered Git is a much more powerful development tool and we expect to use it directly starting some time next year. As of now, we expect to maintain the /locales/ directory in SVN so this change doesn’t affect localizers but we’ll keep people notified if there are any changes to that process.

so... should we consider Git instead of SVN?

production tag and merging stuff in when stable sounds like a nice process...

full import from cvs to svn / search svn history

you can try to import your CVS repository with all associated history into Subversion
.... is the most desirable and also the most difficult. Fortunately, some tools exist to help with this, including cvs2svn, a program that attempts to import your old CVS projects and their history into a Subversion repository. cvs2svn can be downloaded from http://cvs2svn.tigris.org/

And search old code:
This might make it easier to delete obsolete code without loosing access to the smart things you did there - if you should need to look at it again someday...

prototype som jsp taglib

interessant å kikka på... på SF

NetBeans IDE Allows JDJ Contributing Editor to Build JSP Tag Library @ JAVA DEVELOPER'S JOURNAL
With the ever growing popularity of the Prototype JavaScript library, ... Jason Bell ... has created an alpha release of a JSP Tag library on sourceforge.net.

Called "prototaglib" it enables JSP developers to create the required AJAX calls to the Prototype library. It's similar to the Ruby On Rails way of doing things.
....
The taglib enables developers to create link or form based remote tags that call either servlet or jsp pages to populate the required div tags. There are also tags to update a div over a specific period of time.

Currently at an alpha release it is hoped that the community will aid in feedback and request features that can be worked on.

WUI - alternativ til JSP

ser jo lovande ut...

WUI - Web User Interface Framework
JSP development sucks

Let's face it: no two browsers support HTML, XHML, CSS or JavaScript consistently. Wasn't Java supposed to let you "write once, run everywhere"? Well today you can, and you don't have to use applets.

JSPs were great in the infancy of Web development in Java. Today, it's clear that they're the wrong tool for the job. They promote model-1 programming and offer very little reuse potential for the application programmer. Sure there's TAGLIBs. They're no silver bullet: they're performance hogs, they add new dependencies, new semantics and offer very poor reuse capabilities unless you're the author of the tag library itself.
